Heavy Seas Rye Porter
Heavy Seas Beer announces the next release in the Mutiny Fleet line of beers – Letter of Marque Rye Porter. This is a new and limited edition release for 2010 only, available April 1 in 22oz bottles and very limited draft, while it lasts.
The Rye Porter was chosen from the many entries to our Letter of Marque Homebrew Contest in 2009. While the competition was close, Frank Butt and Neil Heinlein emerged the victors after many rounds of tasting by our panel of judges.
A little more about our winners…
Frank and Neil are a father/son-in-law team who began brewing together 2 years ago. Their love of IPA’s often lead them to adding hops experimentally to various recipes. Frank told us: “We originally tried to make a rye IPA because I thought the rye in a hoppy beer would add an interesting flavor. Only thing was, we misread the recipe so instead of using 4 oz. of roasted malt, we used 4 lbs. and that is how we came up with the hop rye porter. Best mistake we ever made.” Our judges agreed. As a brewing team, they have won gold and silver medals Maryland Brewer’s Oktoberfest 2008 and 2009 respectively. Our contest was the 3rd they have entered and won.
Let’s hope they don’t decide to start their own brewery.
The guys came to Heavy Seas this March, and under the supervision of our brewers, made the batch themselves. They’ll return to help with the bottling and kegging.
The Heavy Seas Letter of Marque Contest is an annual event for Heavy Seas. Learn more about how to enter our 2010 contest! (rules and link coming 3/30)
